PSA: Networking can get you Closer to your Dream Job

Hi! It's me again.

Think about your web of people
I'm sure you've heard of the word "networking" before. According to Merriam-Webster, networking is "the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions." My definition is that networking is a tool that can be the most impact, personable skill for successful, long-term career development. In other words, networking can open doors that are otherwise hidden! Your friends, family members, colleagues, role models, professors, bosses, etc. make up your networking web. The more people you know and connect with, the better! Latch on quick, because every minute counts.

These are my Six Networking Tips:
  1. Think about your web of contacts & start networking today
  2. Make the first move (send an e-mail, etc.)
  3. Be available and always say thank you (Suggest times and alternative dates to meet up; mail a direct thank you card afterwards)
  4. Follow-up (A few months later, ask them how they are doing...)
  5. Give a little too (Ex: Is there anything that I can do for you?)
  6. If you are a student, reach out to your career development center and ask for help
Frequently Asked Questions:
https://moljett.wixsite.com/moljett
  • What if they say "No"?
    • Don't take it personally. They are busy people who are making business decision daily. If you do not hear a response, move on and contact the next person.
  • How do I market myself/my brand?
  • Can one of your contacts in your network be your mentor?
    • Yes! Have as many mentors as you want. They can help connect you to your next job opportunity, next market, etc.
Of course, there is so much more that I could share about networking; but for now, this should help you get started. My final suggestions are: Be patient, be confident, and be you. You can only sell you, so give it all you've got! Good luck(-:
